Antique English Mahogany and Walnut Buffets

English Mahogany and Walnut Buffets - Victorian buffet in carved mahogany - 18th Century mahogany buffet - mahogany serpentine front buffet - Regency period buffet in walnut - Late Georgian mahogany buffet - Victorian buffet in carved mahogany

Antique buffet, as distinct from the side or buffet table, is an 18th century innovation generally attributed to Adam, who had the idea of grouping a buffet table with an urn-mounted pedestal at each end, around 1760. Before that one can trace through the 16th and 17th century the various forms of side table for dining use including court cupboards and dressers, but these had been somewhat out of fashion among the
wealthy from the beginning of the 18th century. In the Adam arrangement the centre table had a brass galleryat the back or top for supporting plates and the urns on-each pedestal were used, one for iced water for drinking, the other for hot water for washing the silver. The pedestals were used as a plate warmer and cellaret respectively. Later in the century the arrangement became less massive and the pedestals were omitted, with drawer space in the table taking their place. This later development led to the later Georgian buffets we associate with the name. Shearer and Hepplewhite illustrated the type with pedestals and so did
Sheraton, but Gillows appears to have produced the type with lateral drawers in the last quarter of the 18th century. In the Regency period the side drawers were extended to form cupboards reaching the floor and
proportions again became massive. buffets suffered the same fate as other Regency furniture in the form of zoological embellishment in an attempt to design on classical and Oriental lines.
In the same period the buffet was originated as a separate form, with shelves above and cupboards below. The doors of the cupboard were often latticed in brass with silk backing. During the Victorian period the
buffet and appear to have become inextricably entwined and it is difficult to separate them terminologically.
For the buffets illustrated we have assumed that condition structurally and originality are good. Otherwise the following common value points apply:-
Colour and patination.
Figured woods and decoration
Tambour shutter
For buffets: Brass lattice  Rosewood

A mahogany buffet with tambour shutter below the centre drawer, c. 1780. The top and the drawers are cross banded in satinwood and the oval panel in each deep side drawer is banded with a satinwood inlay
also. The mahogany veneers used are highly figured. Width 6ft.
Satinwood cross banding

A magnificently decorated mahogany buffet with broken serpentine front, c. 1790. One of the two deep drawers is in fact a cupboard. The six square tapering legs are on spade feet. The top is cross banded in
tulipwood and has a satinwood oval with a shell. The front drawers are all cross banded with tulipwood and inlaid with satinwood corners and satinwood spandrels. 5ft. 7ins wide.
Decoration

A mahogany serpentine front buffet, the top cross banded with satinwood, of c. 1790. Again an oval panel decorates the deep drawers and the arched brackets underthe centre drawer are inlaid with a fan or shell
motif in satinwood. The six square tapering legs are inlaid with satinwood in classical style obviously of Adam influence. The width of this particular example is only Oft 4ins hence the higher price scale.
Inlaid decoration

A later Georgian serpentine mahogany buffet of c. 1795. In this case there is no satinwood banding or inlay and the four square tapering legs are somewhat more substantial in order to sustain the weight. Width

An unusual Regency period buffet in walnut where a return to the classical design is evident in the pedestals, which are fitted as a wine cooler and storage space for napery. The reeded columns and paw feet, as well
as the lion masks are very characteristic of Regency styles.

Late Georgian mahogany buffet on four turned legs and without any shaped arching of the centre space. The shape reiterates more simply the earlier forms but the turning on the legs shows signs of later
overdeveloped design.

A Regency mahogany buffet or cabinet, with reeded shelves above and cross banded doors with brass lattices backed by pleated silk. A simple and restrained example of a piece of furniture which originated as an incidental cupboard or commode.

A Regency mahogany buffet with a brass gallery around the upper shelf. The two supporting columns are also brass. This is a slightly later example where the style has become a little less restrained in the curving
sides and feet. The brass lattices in the doors are again backed by pleated silk.
See section notes
N. B. It is again useful to note that this piece of furniture could be described as a cabinet or commode and probably originated as a piece of lady’s incidental furniture.

A Regency buffet of rather more ornate type, often found in rosewood. The shelves have mirror backs and are supported by curved brackets in receding proportion. The sides are reeded and the doors latticed.

A Victorian mahogany buffet in well-figured wood with a drawer fitted flush under the top. There is another, floor level drawer under the solid, cross banded cupboard doors. A pleasantly simple des ign.

A later Victorian buffet in carved mahogany with mirror back and glazed side doors. Electro-gilt metal mounts on such pieces replace the restrained brass of the Regency. Marble-topped versions without the mirror back but with mirrored doors are still common.
Size - many of these pieces are far too large for the modern house. A factor can therefore be assumed for small, manageable examples.
